Staff Spotlight: Nathan Camp, NMSU Library

Release Date: 18 Oct 2023
Nathan Camp

Helping to shape the NMSU Library to its fullest potential, Nathan Camp has taken the lead role in an exciting new learning lab that recently made its debut at Branson Library this fall.

Camp is the emerging technologies librarian in the Reference and Research Services department and has been working at NMSU for a year now.

“I think I have one of the best jobs in the library, which means by extension it’s one of the best jobs on campus,” he said. “I get to come into work every day and play around with really fun technology. It’s a lot of learning and tinkering and troubleshooting, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. This job keeps me on my toes and learning constantly, which is exactly what I want.”

The Emerging Technologies Learning Lab is a brand-new space that provides students, faculty and staff with a welcoming, collaborative environment to experience different types of cutting-edge technology.

“We have high-end Alienware computers for productivity or games with ultrawide, high refresh rate monitors, Meta Quest 2 VR headsets, 3D printing at no cost to patrons, handheld 3D scanners, a 360° camera, and more being added,” Camp said.

In this role, Camp conducts research to determine how this technology can best suit students and campus overall.

“Librarians are faculty members at NMSU, so I’ve also been busy working on research, particularly on loanable technology in academic libraries,” he said.

Camp added that he also meets with anyone who needs assistance with research needs and provides general assistance at the reference desk in Zuhl Library.
